Localization QA: What Happens Before Delivery?

However, localization involves a much more complex process. A truncated button, an incorrect number format, broken placeholders, inconsistent terminology, or culturally inappropriate content – any of it these might fracture an otherwise linguistically accurate localization.
This mandates the need for Localization Quality Assurance (LQA) - the final quality gate between localized content and the end user. It verifies whether the translation is correct, and also whether the localized product actually works, looks sorted, and feels natural to the target market.
Localization QA
This process involves checking localized content against linguistic, functional, visual, technical and cultural requirements before it reaches the customer.
Imagine an English e-commerce application being localized into German.
The translation itself may be perfectly accurate. But during QA, the team discovers that:
- A German product title is too long and gets cut off.
- A CTA button no longer fits its container.
- The currency displays as 99.99 EUR instead of the expected German format.
- A date appears in the wrong format.
- A placeholder such as {customer_name} has accidentally been translated.
- One product category uses a different German term from the rest of the website.
- A translated image contains English text that wasn't localized.
- A mobile screen breaks because the localized string is substantially longer.
The translation is technically correct. The localization isn't. This is where LQA needs to consider the content in context, rather than evaluating strings in isolation.
The LQA Workflow
1. Requirements & Reference Review
Before testing begins, the localization team establishes what "good" means.
This may include considering aspects like Client style guides, Terminology databases, TMs, Brand guidelines, Product specifications, Character or UI limitations etc. A reviewer needs the right reference material before making quality decisions.
2. Linguistic QA
This is the proofreading part. The reviewer checks Grammar & spelling, Meaning, Terminology, Tone etc.
A translation can be grammatically flawless and still sound like something nobody would actually say. Native linguistic judgement is, therefore, important in particular for projects involving less technical, more creative, conspicuous, subjective content.
3. Functional QA
Localization can introduce technical problems that aren't visible when looking at the source and target text side by side. Functional QA checks elements including Buttons, Menus, Forms, Links, Search fields, Error messages, Navigation, Interactive elements, Variables, Dynamic content etc. For software and websites, testers may interact with the localized product just as an end user would.
4. UI & Visual QA
An English sentence may fit comfortably inside a button while its German equivalent requires considerably more room. Some languages may require different text direction, line breaking or font handling. In that regard, Visual QA checks Text truncation, Incorrect line breaks, Overlapping elements, Font problems, Alignment, Spacing, Button sizes, Text overflowing containers, Missing translations, Incorrect graphics, Images containing untranslated text etc.
5. Checking Numbers, Dates & Currency
Different markets use different conventions for Date & Time formats, Decimal & Thousands separators, Currency, Measurements, Phone Numbers etc. These details can seem insignificant until a customer misunderstands a price, deadline or transaction.
6. Placeholder & Variable Validation
Modern digital products frequently contain dynamic variables, e.g., Hello, {first_name}!
During localization QA, reviewers need to make sure that these variables remain intact and function correctly. A translated string that accidentally changes {first_name} into something else can cause the application to malfunction. Hence, localization QA requires both linguistic expertise and technical awareness.
7. Terminology Consistency
Take the example of a software product that refers to the same feature as "Dashboard", "Control Panel", "Management Centre", "Overview" in different parts of the application.
Each expression might be linguistically acceptable. Together, they create inconsistency. LQA compares localized content against Terminology databases, Glossaries, TMs and Product-specific terminology.
8. Cultural & Contextual Review
A technically accurate translation can still be culturally unsuitable.
Localization QA may therefore evaluate images, phrases, idioms, slogans, symbols, references, humor & sarcasm etc
For instance, a slogan that works beautifully in English may sound awkward or meaningless when translated literally. The goal is to ensure that the message creates the intended effect in the target market, without changing the brand's message arbitrarily.
9. Automated QA
Human reviewers aren't the only participants in modern localization QA.
Automated QA tools can identify issues like duplicate spaces, incorrect tags, numeric mistmatches, missing translations, character limit violations, inconsistencies in formatting etc. Automation is particularly useful for large localization projects where thousands or millions of words may be involved.
10. Human-in-the-Loop QA
A strong localization workflow combines technology with human linguistic expertise. While AI and automation promises speed, efficiency and scale, human reviewers are able to provide Context, Cultural Understanding, Nuance and Judgement.
What Happens When QA Finds an Error?
LQA isn't simply about finding problems.
A professional workflow also needs a structured way of resolving them.
Issues are generally:
- Identified
- Recorded
- Categorised
- Assigned a severity
- Corrected
- Re-tested
A useful severity framework might classify issues as:
Critical
The localized product cannot function correctly.
Major
The problem significantly affects usability, meaning or customer experience.
Minor
The issue doesn't prevent use but affects quality or consistency.
Cosmetic
The issue has limited impact, such as a minor visual inconsistency.
This allows project teams to prioritise the issues that matter most instead of treating every typo as a five-alarm emergency.
