Hand-off to Delivery - The Localization Pipeline

Startups, SaaS enterprises, manufacturers, e-commerce entities, healthcare providers, edupreneurs – at present, they’re all embracing the approach of reaching customers across languages & cultures. Localization has become a decisive factor for business success for smaller enterprises as much as the giants.
And the ideal localization service is one with a structured workflow – a well-coordinated pipeline to ensure contextual coherence, linguistic accuracy, cultural relevance & technical consistency.
Localization takes into account factors that go beyond mere translation of content – popular culture, context, regional references & standards, UX, technical compatibility, compliance etc. The right localization workflow is the one where all these factors, and more, are addressed the right way.
1. Requirement Analysis
With the project hand-off, understanding the client’s requirement forms the foundational pillar for the pipeline. Determining the source language & target language, the target market (country, state, region etc.), the sector, the product/service, file format, stipulated TAT – these are the initial steps. The project manager also has to get a style guide, a translation memory & a brief about the expected tone ready before getting the files pre-processed.
2. Pre-processing & Terminology Management
The tech team determines the file format & prepares the files for translation.
To ensure consistency in translation, term bases or glossaries are created (and updated regularly). This ensures that a word isn’t translated in five different ways in the same document, or across multiple documents in the same project with the same context. Consistency across documentation is crucial.
3. TM Analysis & Translation
This stage includes loading and analyzing the Translation Memory, and pull it up to apply it across the file to mark 100% matches, fuzzy matches, repetitions etc. The translator then begins translating. Apart from consistency, they must adhere to the required contextual coherence, tone, terminology, brand style, natural phrasing, relevant cultural references and, of course, grammar.
4. QA & Edit
Manual and tool-assisted QA check of the translated draft ensures optimum quality. The proofreader checks the translated content for inconsistency, inaccuracy, grammar errors, incorrect terminology, missing content etc. The automated QA check scans for formatting & tag issues, grammar issues, capitalization issues, punctuation issues etc.
5. DTP and Formatting
Preserving the original format, layout and design scheme of the files is important. The DTP (Desktop Publishing) part caters to that. Files like pamphlets, flyers, brochures, PPTs etc particularly require this aspect to be taken into account.
- In the case of software, apps or websites, the functional testing stage is necessary. The localization engineer performs testing to verify the different elements of the translated interface – the text, buttons, character encoding, format, UI functioning and so on.
- Client Review & Post-Delivery Steps for Continuous Improvement: The client might conduct in-house reviews of the localized content at their end. They often provide feedback with regard to terminology, tone preferences, product naming etc.
- Even after successful delivery of the final files, LSPs undertake continuous improvement – updating the TMs, glossaries, style guides etc., making a note of client preferences & feedback for future reference. Continuous improvement measures ensure faster & more consistent turnaround for future projects.
